Thane had left me to make a trip to his dorm. He promised to be back in a handful of minutes, so I decided to use the time to get the kitten settled in.

The door was unlocked, so tucking the cat inside my coat, I stepped into the kitchen. Meg was at the sink washing dishes but turned when she heard the squeak of the door opening.

Her eyes widened as she took me in. “What happened?”

I realized I was still smeared with mud and grime. My eyes were probably red from my bursting-into-tears moment, too. “It’s been a long day. Um…”

Then her eyes landed on the furball, who popped her head from inside my coat to peer around the kitchen. “Is that a cat?”

I scratched the kitten behind her ears. “Do you think we could keep her?”

Meg dried her hands on a towel and rushed forward, pushing her round glasses up her button nose.

Her eyes were already sparkling, even as she said, “Meri’s never said yes to any pet. Ever.”

“That was when it was all theoretical. Now it’s real. And besides, I found her in a collapsed building. It’s not like she has a home to go back to.” I cuddled the kitten, my stomach twisting at the image of turning her out to the elements.

Then I had a better idea and held her out to Meg.

Meg scooped her gently into her arms and nuzzled her nose to nose.

“You are sweet,” she cooed. “You are. What’s your name, cutie?”

She looked up at me expectantly.

“Uh…”

“You didn’t even name her? She’s got to be called something. It’ll make it harder for Meri to say no.” Meg held her up to the light, and the kitten played her part by meowing piteously. “Silver’s too on the nose, I think.”

She looked at me again. It was clearly a prompt for me to say something. “Well, we found her in the rubble…”

“Absolutely not. You can’t call her Rubble.” Meg rolled her eyes.

“Granite?” I suggested, running a finger along the kitten’s ear. Though, now that I thought about it, her gray coloring might be from the dirt and dust.

There was a soft knock, and the door opened again. Thane reappeared, hair windblown and cheeks reddened from the wind.

He set a canvas bag on the floor to slip off his coat. He’d changed into something less filthy. I watched with interest as his red tee slid up, showing the curve of his hip as he hung his coat on the coat rack.

Meg’s mouth fell open.

Bending, he picked up his bag and grinned at us. For a moment, I forgot how to speak. “What are you two talking about? Did I miss anything fun?”

It took my brain a few moments to process what he’d said. “We were trying to name the kitten,” I managed, looking to Meg for support.

She was still staring.

“That’s easy. Her name’s Sapphire. For her eyes.” Thane reached out to scratch under her chin.

Sapphire blinked her deep blue eyes and purred.

Then he looked at Meg.
